The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka (to be published in the US on Nov 1) was named the winner of the 2022 Booker Prize in a ceremony in London tonight

He was presented with his trophy by Her Majesty The Queen Consort in a new-look ceremony held at the Roundhouse, featuring a keynote speech by singer-songwriter Dua Lipa and hosted by comedian Sophie Duker.

In accepting the award, Karunatilaka said “My hope for Seven Moons is this: that in the not too distant future, 10 years or whatever it takes, that it is read in a Sri Lanka that has understood that these ideas of corruption and race baiting and cronyism have not worked, and will never work.”
